The Bad Man (2018) Review

The Bad Man is the new film from Scott Schirmer ("Found", "Harvest Lake", "Plank Face"), and it stars Ellie Church Arthur Cullipher , Jason Crowe and Dave Parker.

On the surface, this film is a tale of two lovers PJ and Mary (Ellie Church & Jason Crowe), who are kidnapped and tortured by a sadistic clown (Arthur Cullipher) bent on transforming them into a 'doll' and a 'dog' -- servile sex slaves that will be sold to the highest bidders.
Reading that synopsis would probably either turn some people off the film, or perhaps draw them to it (depending on what type of film you enjoy), but allow me to give you my true and honest thoughts on the matter.

The Bad Man is a film which is quite rare, given that it is able to invoke emotion and feeling unlike anything that I have seen recently.

Many films try to do this, but fail miserably, either by overuse of common cliches, the inability to put together a decent script, or the dreaded CGI virus which has plagued the world of horror film over the past several years.

I felt the suffering of both Mary and PJ (particularly PJ) throughout the duration of this film, and that also is a credit to both Ellie and Jason for their excellent acting in such roles that must have been tough to pull off.
Credit must also be given to Arthur Cullipher who played Lawrence/The Clown in perhaps one of the most menacing clown roles I've seen in a very long time (THIS is how you play a clown - people take note!).

I felt a little sad at the end, especially for PJ (no spoilers), and I could tell that Jason truly did his best to show this in his character, which was portrayed with heart, soul and the ability to make me believe his pain and suffering.

Sound/Score was used minimally, but effective, and for once in a long time, voices were not drowned out by the overuse of "dramatic" music. Thank you to the sound team onboard for that!
Credit to Scott Schirmer for the amazing direction of this, and also the excellent script (those clown monologue scenes were amazing!). I have been a fan of Scott's films since "Found", and knew he was destined for great things - who knows what he will bring next!
He's a force to be reckoned with, that is for damn sure, and I am very excited for what he brings to the table next!
